Custom Subdomain SSL Certificate Error - 'ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH'

UPDATE: I figured I'd try loading ssl.honeybook.com directly, which is the custom data field we enter in our DNS settings to use a custom subdomain in HoneyBook. I discovered that ssl.honeybook.com itself is returning a ‘Cloudflare Error 1016’ (Origin DNS error), which suggests this may be a HoneyBook infrastructure issue rather than anything on the user side.

ssl.honeybook.com error message

Anyone else experiencing a custom subdomain SSL cert issue? I have tried everything under the sun. Unfortunately for me, it's after hours and the HB support team is not online to help.

my subdomain ssl error message

This surfaced today when a client was unable to access a smart file I sent. I initially thought it was a faulty automation or smart file trigger, so I rebuilt and resent the file two more times before realizing the issue was deeper. My entire custom subdomain is down due to an SSL certificate failure.

My Squarespace DNS CNAME is set to ssl.honeybook.com and my HoneyBook domain status shows as "Active," but I'm still getting the ‘ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH’ error when loading the subdomain. I've been trying to find a resolution for a few hours with no success.

Hoping someone has a solution or has been through this. In the meantime, I'll be emailing concierge@honeybook.com as I await an update from the support chat.

Thanks in advance for any feedback :)

@Maria Soto - I haven’t seen this issue personally. The best recourse is reaching out to support like you had mentioned already. I didn’t see any errors on the downtime log but you can always check that here too! I hope it gets worked out soon for you!

@Alicia Bauer Thanks so much for your response! Very strange indeed. I'm not sure if you tried accessing ssl.honeybook.com directly, but it's showing a Cloudflare error on my end. The interesting part is that I don't use Cloudflare to host my domain, but it appears HoneyBook does, which is why I’m assuming the issue is on HB’s infrastructure side, not mine.

Unfortunately, my clients can't access their portal or smart files right now, and support mentioned it could take up to a business day for an update. That's really tough timing since I can't share smart files or invoices in the meantime. Fingers crossed they can resolve it quickly! 🤞

@Maria Soto -  From the errors you're seeing (Error 1016 and the SSL mismatch), this usually points to the subdomain not resolving correctly to the HoneyBook portal, even if the DNS record itself looks correct in the domain settings.

Since SSL certificates for the portal are generated automatically once the domain connection resolves properly, this is one of those cases where HoneyBook support will likely need to check the connection on their side and confirm that the certificate provisioned correctly.

Because custom subdomains are tied to account-level infrastructure, unfortunately we aren’t going to be able to see what’s happening behind the scenes.

I know that you already have but I would make sure to communicate with support, so they can check the domain connection and SSL provisioning directly. They should be able to tell pretty quickly whether it’s a DNS propagation issue or something that needs to be refreshed on their end.
