Gratuity on Auto Payments

When preparing project proposals, I structure client payments into two installments of 50% each: the first installment is due upon booking, and the second is due prior to the event date with mandatory autopay to ensure a seamless process and avoid payment delays. Additionally, I offer clients the option to include a gratuity.

However, I recently discovered an issue: if a client opts to add a gratuity to their payment, it is only applied to the initial deposit rather than the total project amount. This means the gratuity (e.g., 20%) is calculated solely on the first payment and not evenly distributed across both installments or based on the total amount.

I reached out to HoneyBook support, and they confirmed that there is currently no workaround for this issue. This seems like a significant limitation, as gratuity should logically apply to the full project total, not just the deposit.

Does this make sense? I believe this feature could greatly benefit both businesses and clients by streamlining gratuity calculations and providing a more accurate representation of payment expectations.

Hey Samantha!

Romey from HoneyBook here :)

We totally hear you! As someone from the event industry, I get it! Ideally that gratuity is applied with that last payment (aka the total of the invoice).

This is such a great point and because the gratuity feature has gotten a bit of an update recently, there’s definitely room for more changes and improvements down the road! I’m going to get this feature request to the right team for us but it would be so helpful to get this idea posted over in our Ideas corner of community so that others can upvote it! The most upvotes, the better!

@Samantha Barber - Thank you for flagging this! I have had this same instance happen with my Brand and Web Design clients. I split their invoices into multiple payments but the gratuity isn’t reflective of the total price. Definitely hopping over to upvote that in the ideas corner! 💛

@Romey Hooper

Just wanted to follow up and see if there was any traction on this.
