Newcomber - Help with invoicing

I have a retainer client (on a recurring invoice for the retainer payment) whom I send a monthly running itemized invoice to that gets updated frequently with different projects throughout the month, and often has a remaining balance invoice at the end of each month. What would be the best way to create an invoice(s) for this type of client?

    Client commits to paying you $X/month for retainer services, yes? Like a baseline?

    Client of term incurs overages beyond that baseline on a monthly basis?
