Question

I was told, "Buy a magnet with your logo, put it on your car when your family goes on a road trip you can claim those miles because it's considered mobile marketing." Legit?

Hi Dan!

You may claim the magnet itself as a marketing expense. To write off travel expenses, the IRS requires that the primary purpose of the trip be for business purposes. You may find a list of possibel tax deductions here

@Geily Romero slightly related but I’m traveling next week. I booked the trip for strictly personal reasons but have since received significant interest in my business from multiple potential clients. I have booked 4 appointments across Thursday & Friday and plan to spend Saturday & Sunday with family (the original reason for the trip). I DO NOT want to venture into a gray area but can I expense this trip now that work has come up? I’m ok with “no” but wanted to make sure. Thanks!

Hi @Dan Hayden!

I pulled this straight from the IRS website here to help you distinguish. From what I understand, to be safe, I would probably recommend solely deducting the activities related to business as opposed to the entire trip.
