Is there a way to start an automation based on which contact form was submitted, instead of using the project type?

I have multiple contact forms for different types of sessions.

I am looking specifically at the contact forms that I embed on my website, not standalone lead forms. Depending on the service, I use different contact forms on my website. For example, my wedding inquiry form includes wedding-related questions, not boudoir questions.

When I create an automation, the trigger only says Contact Form Submitted, but I don’t see an option to choose which specific contact form should start the automation.

This was possible in the old automations, and I am including a screenshot showing how it was set up there. Being able to choose the specific contact form was the main thing that made this process work.

I do see an option to choose the project type, but that adds another step for the person filling out the form. Since the contact form is already created for a specific service, asking the potential client to also choose the type of session feels like extra work for them.

I also noticed that many inquiries do not have the project type filled out. That is why I am asking this question. Without this option, I still have to go into each inquiry and start the automation manually, the same way I was doing it with the old automations.

That is actually why I created different contact forms based on the service. I want to keep the inquiry process simple and clear for each client.

My question is: Is there a way to start an automation based on which embedded website contact form was submitted, instead of using the project type?

If this option is not available right now, I would like to request it as a feature. It would be very helpful for businesses that use different contact forms for different services.

Hi @Bozena Voytko (again!),

While you can’t trigger an automation based off of a specific contact form, you CAN trigger an automation based off of a specific lead form.

So, I would recommend:

  1. Making a lead form version of each of the ones you already have
  2. Then embedding those lead forms into your site.
  3. After that, you can change the trigger of the automation to “Lead Form Submitted” and choose the specific lead form
  4. In the settings of the lead form, you can assign the project type of each lead that submits. So, if somebody fills out the “Boudoir” lead form, they would automatically come in as a “Boudoir” project type.

I know it will take some time and effort to make that change happen, but it should ultimately save you a lot of time when you don’t have to manually trigger the next automations!

Does that make sense?

Hi Kaitlyn Blair

Yes, that makes sense, and I understand that I could create lead form versions of each form.

The issue is that lead forms require the client to choose from my offerings. I do not share my offerings or pricing publicly before someone connects with me first.

For my workflow, the contact form is meant to be the first step. The client fills it out, I learn more about what they need, check if I am available for their date, and then I share the right information, options, and pricing with them.

I only take a limited number of dates, so there is no reason for a client to choose a product or offering before I know if I am available. Also, if I am not personally available for their date, I may offer associate photography instead, which has different pricing than my own coverage.

Because of that, I do not send pricing or offerings to every lead right away.

So while lead forms may work for some businesses, they do not really fit the way I handle new inquiries. That is why having the option to trigger an automation from a specific contact form would still be the best solution for my workflow.

Unless there is a way to create a lead form that does not require the client to choose a package or offering, but still lets me ask the same custom questions I use on my contact forms.

Lead forms feel a little like the brochures that used to be available, and I would still need to receive the inquiry first, learn about the client, and then decide what information or package options make sense to send them. I also would not want potential clients to choose a package before they even inquire, because many people may leave the form once they see pricing, and then I would never get the chance to know they were interested or connect with them first.

Hi @Bozena Voytko,

You should be able to make a “blank” lead form and not need to add any of your services or offerings. Basically an exact replica of your contact form! I’ve attached a picture of where to find the “blank” lead form option when you click the “Create New” button. It’s at the very bottom.
