Security Deposit

I have not found a definitive answer to this, so I would like to request this as a feature.

I have been using HB for 5 years and every one of my contracts includes a security deposit.  There is no way within the invoicing system to account for the returning of this deposit after the event is over.   I write the clients a check or venmo, etc… and then I have to reconcile these transactions in QB with our bookkeepers, but it leaves our HB numbers broken for every contract, and the numbers don’t match up at the end of the year.

This also causes confusion for our clients as the final number on the bottom of the invoice does not reflect the final price, and I have to include detailed text outside of the invoice to explain our process.

I suspect that HB doesn’t want to include this functionality as it creates a need to return funds within their billing and invoicing system.  I gotta say that I don’t care about that.  Right now I just need the functionality to put those numbers on paper and hand it to the client.  I’m already using outside payment methods because HB doesn’t support any of this.

I would be able to use HB as a more functional platform if this simple line item on the invoice could be fixed.  but as it stands HB will only ever be a tertiary program within our organization until this can be resolved.

Please advise.

@WestCoastMichiganMatt - I can definitely see the need for this, especially for businesses that routinely collect refundable security deposits as part of their booking process.

Being able to clearly designate a payment or line item as a refundable security deposit would help distinguish it from actual project revenue and give both the business and the client a more accurate picture of the true cost of the service. Ideally, there would also be a way to record when that deposit has been returned so the final project totals and reporting accurately reflect what was ultimately retained.

I wouldn't want to speculate on why this functionality isn't currently available, but I think you've provided a really helpful real-world example of why it would be valuable. The reporting and reconciliation piece is especially important when HoneyBook is being used alongside accounting software.

Since this was submitted as a Question, I would recommend searching the Ideas section to see if there is already a similar request you can upvote and add your use case to. If you don't find one, I would definitely submit this as a new Idea/Feature Request. That will allow other members who also collect refundable security deposits to upvote it and give the product team a better way to gauge how many businesses would benefit from this functionality.
